United States Consulate
Lagos, Nigeria

Spacesmith is the lead interior designer for the new 271,350 sf U.S. consulate general in Lagos, Nigeria, which includes a 203,300 sf office building, a 36,400 sf support annex, a 14,585 sf cabana, and 17,060 sf marine residence. In collaboration with design architect Ennead Architects, the consulate is envisioned as a green oasis within the dense urban fabric of Eko Atlantic—a newly developed district designed to protect Lagos from rising sea levels.

The architecture draws inspiration from the meandering channels of the Lagos Lagoon. The gently curving site geometry channels wind and water to create cool microclimates while showcasing stormwater management as a design feature.

Perimeter buildings frame a central open space—the heart of the site—maximizing daylight, ventilation, and a strong connection to the landscape for the consulate community.

Workstation clusters are placed along the exterior wall maximizing access to daylight while private offices are positioned along the perimeter for borrowed daylight and direct oversight. Shared support is distributed evenly across all floors, adjacent to the office suites, and accessible from the corridor to maximize utilization rates.

Growth, open collaboration areas, and office support stations are distributed evenly throughout the suites. Workstations can reconfigure to allow for additional growth without redesign. Additional file storage and printing stations are conveniently located between clusters along the exterior wall.

The design palette borrows from the traditional building material of Nigeria, using textured surfaces that allude to carving traditions and craftmanship. Biophilic design uses natural materials, organic shapes, and wood tones to create warmth. Accents of bright and vibrant colors and textiles are used to create drama and interest. The palette also minimizes glare and creates depth with shadows.
