The Hewitt School
The Hewitt School, an independent Kindergarten through twelfth grade all girls’ school located on the Upper East Side was seeking to expand their existing facilities due to increased enrollment. The School embarked on a search within the immediate neighborhood for a suitable building. Spacesmith was enlisted to analyze buildings for compatibility with Hewitt’s mission requirements and develop a master plan for the future.
Spacesmith was engaged to design the facility for the School’s Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Since the building was located in a landmarked district, it was designed within the context of the historic fabric of the neighborhood and was approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the community board.
The interior was completely renovated including the addition of a new stair as well as elevator. The façade was restored to its original historic detail with new engaged limestone columns and brickwork that were reworked to align with existing profiles. The building now houses new classrooms, art and music studios, solarium and faculty offices. The classrooms and cafeteria feature movable partitions which allow these spaces to have maximum flexibility.
The Hewitt School is an independent all girls’ school, serving kindergarten through grade 12 and located on the Upper East Side.
