She Wolf Bakery

As part of an on-call contract with the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, Spacesmith designed a new production facility and retail space for She Wolf Bakery in Building 77. This 6,000-sf space, which includes a 900-sf storefront, marks She Wolf’s first brick-and-mortar location, an exciting milestone that allows the bakery to grow its operations while deepening its connection with the public.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard encourages its tenants to provide visibility into their processes. In response, our design promotes transparency while maintaining operational efficiency and the integrity of She Wolf’s breadmaking craft. To kick off the project, we toured the bakery’s existing facility and held collaborative visioning sessions to better understand its goals and values.

Visitors are welcomed into a warm, inviting retail area anchored by a communal family-style table and framed by custom millwork displays. A fire-rated glass partition behind the retail counter offers clear views into the dough room, allowing patrons to witness the bakery in action.

The space features a thoughtfully restrained material palette: white subway tile, dark walnut millwork, quartz counters, a glazed storefront, and a poured concrete floor, an aesthetic reflection of the bakery’s pure and simple ingredients: flour, water, and leavening.

In the production area, the flow of space closely mirrors the rhythm of daily operations, from flour delivery on an elevated platform to storage, mixing, shaping, proofing, baking, and packing. The facility also includes a pastry room, café kitchen, and staff support spaces. Durable, easy-to-clean finishes, climate-controlled environments, and all-electric equipment support both functionality and sustainability.

Throughout construction, our team coordinated closely with engineers, consultants, and the client to resolve technical challenges, such as integrating recessed utilities within a level floor slab. The finished space not only enhances production and workflow but also celebrates She Wolf’s commitment to craft by bringing their artisanal process front and center for customers to enjoy.
