SCO empowers families through life-changing care, housing, education, and behavioral health support

SCO Family of Services supports children and families affected by trauma, including homelessness, abuse, and foster care. For the renovation of their five-story, 30,000-sf Genovese Family Life Center, our team applied trauma-informed design to create a safe, welcoming space that promotes dignity, healing, and resilience. By addressing both physical and emotional needs, we prioritized privacy, well-being, and choice in every aspect of the design.

This project embodies sustainable and socially responsible design. A complete gut renovation significantly reduced the building’s energy use and carbon footprint. The HVAC system was upgraded with six new mechanical units and bi-polar ionization, while energy-efficient LED lighting with daylight controls was installed. Accessibility was enhanced with a new elevator, ramp, and motorized entry doors.

To reduce environmental injustice, especially in underserved communities, the interior design avoided toxic materials by using Red List Free finishes. Staircases were emphasized to encourage movement, and adaptable workstations allow for future growth.

With 50% of staff working in the field, we introduced a mobile workforce strategy that enabled desk-sharing through a cloud-based reservation system.

Natural light was maximized by placing frequently occupied areas near windows, with shades to reduce glare and manage heat. Biophilic design elements—such as visual access to nature, areas of retreat, and uplifting furnishings—foster wellness and reduce stress, supporting the Center’s mission of healing and care.
