NYC CLC Swing Space
The New York City Central Labor Center (NYC CLC) is the largest local labor membership organization under the direction of the national AFL-CIO. After completing a feasibility study to determine the possibility of creating a “labor center” which would not only hold the CLC’s offices, but also those of several other smaller unions, our team was tasked with renovating an 8-storey building at 350 West 31st Street as floors become available. The CLC is the first tenant to occupy the building. Spacesmith’s directive was to design a “swing space” that would temporarily house the group until the other floors became available for construction. This swing space also acts as a “model unit” to attract other unions who would eventually occupy the space.
