Hermès, French luxury fashion house

Spacesmith continued the role as executive architect to Hermès of Paris on the renovation of a 1,140 sf franchised boutique located at JFK International Airport. Working closely once again with Paris-based design architect Rena Dumas Architecture Interieure, one of the main goals of the renovation was to exploit the natural light available from the store’s back window wall that overlooks the tarmac, previously hidden by a solid display.

Our team began by reorganizing the boutique, dividing a large storage area into two smaller units that book end the floor plate, allowing merchandize teams to better organize their inventory. A largely open space, accent area rugs and open wall displays help define zones for the wide variety of goods offered by the luxury giant.

Standard Hermès finishes of European cherry wood millwork and furniture pieces are utilized throughout.

Unique to this location, a metal mesh adorns the façade. This material is repeated throughout the store in different instances and variations, creating visual continuity. They hang from select display dividing walls and act as an overlay on a transparent scrim that now covers the back window wall, adding texture without blocking daylight from filtering in.

A break from Hermès’ traditional Terrazzo tiling, the chosen flooring matches that of the passing corridor, creating a boundary free entrance that welcomes shoppers in.
