Hermès, French luxury fashion house

Hermès of Paris engaged Spacesmith in architectural services for their new retail store in Greenwich, CT, their 364th global boutique. As ‘Architect of Record’, Spacesmith collaborated with the Paris design team Rena Dumas Architecture Interieure (RDAI). The space, formerly occupied by Tommy Hilfiger, is housed within the Smith Building, a neoclassical structure erected in 1906, and is part of the Greenwich Avenue Historic District. Elegantly sited at a prominent corner location, the 5,250 sf store features a two story gallery reminiscent of Louis XIV’s famous Hall of Mirrors (Gallerie des Glaces). The Greek revival architecture is left in its pure form, with high arched windows and large doric columns. New additions highlight the space: Hermès’ iconic mosaic tiles and cherry wood paneling mixed with mamorino stucco panels. The project’s elegant architecture and fine finishes set the stage for these exquisite products.

The unique retail experience begins upon entering the building’s curved vestibule. Customers step into a two story museum like foyer, devoid of any merchandizing. This large space can be utilized for special events or occasions. Following the entire length of the building, the main gallery enjoys oversized double height windows. Daylight streams deep into the space and highlighting the luxurious goods within. Hermes scarves are displayed like works of art along the walls.

Along the rear façade, the design team enlarged the windows allowing southern daylight to brighten up the jewelry and leather goods display. On the perimeter walls, customers find timeless Hermes goods, on display like pieces of art. At night, understated signage illuminates the windows, further downplaying the merchandizing while featuring the building’s inspiring architecture.
