Flushing Community Library was completed in 1998 in a vibrant multi-cultural neighborhood. It plays a vital role in the community and services a high number of patrons. By one estimate there are approximately 8,000 unique visitors daily, making this the second busiest library in the Queens Public Library System. All 4 levels of the Library are accessible to the public and are serviced by a single elevator.
Spacesmith was contracted by the DDC to design an additional elevator that improves traffic flow and vertical circulation, upgrade the existing elevator to match, and reconfigure any adjacent interior spaces affected by the renovation. The new design has to be sensitive to and enhance the design elements of the existing architecture.
