Out with the New

It’s not new, it’s newer than new! Maybe it’s nostalgia creeping in after turning yet another year older. Maybe it’s because I can’t name one new song on the radio currently. Whatever the case may be, “the only thing that is constant is change,” and New York is no exception.

Over the past decade, I have witnessed an ushering in of “new” into this ever changing city: from people blindly running into me on the street while searching for Pokemon, to floating ear buds; from ride sharing, to co-working. The minute you feel up to speed, you’re behind.

New York’s built environment is no different. Bigger leases, larger development projects, and entire city blocks changing on your daily commute. After recently completing a project in the new 55 Hudson Yards building, and wondering if I am fancy enough to use the public restrooms, you start to wonder to whom the future of the city is serving.

Now there is more than enough content out there covering the benefit and toxicity of new construction in this magnificent city. So with all this change, it’s always nice to take a walk down memory lane and remember the good ol’ days. Or, in this case, remember the good ole’ buildings. In my nostalgic state, I have pulled together some of my favorite Upper West Side New York Gems.

Let’s see if you can guess which buildings they are!
